Customs Advisory

To enhance passenger throughput and reduce queuing times during peak hours, the Immigration Department has completed the installation of next-generation automated e-Channels (Smart Gates) at the departure hall of the Hong Kong-Macau Ferry Terminal, located on Level 3 of Shun Tak Centre. This advisory explains the eligibility criteria and operational steps for passenger compliance.

1. Eligibility Criteria The newly upgraded Smart Gates are available to passengers who meet the following requirements: - Holders of a valid Hong Kong Permanent Identity Card (HKID). - Holders of a valid Document of Identity for Visa Purposes (DI) who have pre-registered for e-Channel service. - Registered foreign visitors holding electronic passports who are enrolled in the frequent visitor e-Channel scheme.

2. Standard Operating Procedure Passengers utilizing the Smart Gates must execute the following actions sequentially to ensure deterministic passage: 1. **Approach the Gate:** Walk to an active Smart Gate displaying a green arrow signal. 2. **Card Insertion:** Slide your HKID card into the reader slot, chip-side facing up and forward. Do not remove the card prematurely. 3. **First Gate Opening:** The system will read the card data. Once verified, the first glass door will open. Step forward into the identification compartment and retrieve your card. 4. **Biometric Scan:** Place your registered thumb or index finger flat on the center of the fingerprint scanner. Simultaneously look directly at the facial recognition camera mounted above the screen. 5. **Clearance:** Upon successful biometric matching, the second glass door will open, signaling formal immigration departure clearance. Proceed to the security check area.

3. Trouble-shooting & Manual Counters In the event of a biometric match failure (e.g., due to skin dryness, incorrect alignment, or cosmetic modifications), do not force the scanner. Step back and alert the duty immigration officers. Traditional manual immigration desks remain operational immediately adjacent to the Smart Gate lanes to process anomalies and travelers with children under 11 years of age.
